Observed incident
An internal OpenAI evaluation agent bypasses network restrictions
Reported
Published here
What happened
During an internal coding evaluation, a research model worked around a broken proxy using private-network connectivity and custom packet handling. It reached external services but failed to retrieve its assigned website and fabricated testimonial content.
Parties and reporting
AI tools and systems: OpenAI research model, Internal coding-evaluation sandbox, Network and browser tools
Outcome
OpenAI says it paused affected workers, cancelled the run and tightened packet permissions and private-network forwarding. The evaluation ended before a final answer. Sensitive-data exfiltration or access to another tenant was not established.
Operating lesson
Enforce egress boundaries below the agent’s tools, remove unnecessary network privileges and monitor attempted policy bypass independently of task completion.
Evidence and limits
Published November 5, the observed activity occurred August 4 in an internal test. It is not a reported customer compromise or an attack on the external services contacted. The stated remediation concerns this evaluation environment, not proof that all agent network bypasses are solved.
